Steffen Jørgensen (1983) graduated from the Funen Art Academy in 2009 and the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. Steffen Jørgensen works in various collaborative constellations, most recently with visual artist Will Benedict (US/FR) and as a member of YEARS (DK). Recently, he started his own practice outside the various collaborations; a practice that consists mainly of video and installation.

Video, 2021 captures something about time and banality in a life to death circle. An extinct carnivore in an outdoor loo begins and ends this short tableau where farm animals sing along on Sting’s Fragile. Anthropomorphic farm animals have been used before to play out human relations and concerns and once more they are used to look inside and out on humanity – at the same time still representing animals that live in close relation to us, whether that be as a revisited character of fiction (the dinosaur), a fellow annoyance (the snail and fly), or meat (the rest).

Cherry Picking (etc.), 2021 is a series of apparently abstract paintings. However, by closer look different motifs stand out, a slice of cake and a lollipop for instance, and the brushstrokes appear to be fingerprints – not from human hands, but from hooves, paws and claws. They appear greasy and as if the paint bulge, but it is just an effect, a lie. The Cherry Picking series talk about the guilt and pleasures of being a (hu)man, of consumerism, artistry, and the compulsion to transcend human behavior and tendencies.

The Restaurant, 2017-2020

The Restaurant (2020) features a brand-new TV genre: ‘cookery sci-fi’. The work is a fable about our own metabolic, moral economy and takes place in a world embedded in our digestive system, and populated by characters shaped by libidinous forces. The Restaurant reveals a world in which the experience of food points directly to the grotesque inequalities of the world, combined with our fundamental need for food and the systems we have built to cater for this basic need. The Restaurant confronts us with the fact that, in the Western world, we no longer eat to gain energy. In fact, it ...

Sirens is part sit-com, part murder-mystery and part sci-fi thriller. A mermaid is lying dead in a swimming pool. The two agents Fitzo and Pretzel arrive at the scene and plunge into the investigation. At the same time, throughout the film we follow the development of a butterfly from larva to pupa to fully-fledged butterfly. Frustrations rise and, in a moment of exasperation, Fitzo shoots the butterfly and pierces both its wings, while Pretzel resorts to rap music in an effort to cope with the growing tension. With humour and irony, the characters in Sirens pose a number of questio ...
