'ANNA SCHACHINGER EXTENDS PROCESSES OF TIDYING AND REPURPOSING INTO HER PAINTINGS. THE RESULT BEARS WITNESS TO THE INTENSIFICATION OF ROUTINE AS A MEANS TO RESIST STAGNATION.'
- Anna Schachinger, As Much From Avarice, interviewed by Miriam Stoney, in: PW-Magazine
The three paintings presented by Anna Schachinger at Liste Art Fair Basel 2022 are part of the artist's most recent body of work exploring the residual use of the her own practice. As painter, the basic materials for Schachinger are fabrics, stretcher bars, pigments, and paint mediums. Over the years, she has built up a large stockpile of these things, thinking that someday she might make use of them: in her studio there are, for instance, boxes filled with fabric scraps, old canvases, and worn garments.
Only working with what is in the studio is a restraining framework that outsources many decisions the painter would generally make, but at the same time also acts as source of inspiration. Schachinger deals with questions such as: How can a composition be made from fabric scraps? How much ocher can this painting take? Questions that also explore the limits of good taste. After all, one shouldn't use ocher simply because one has too much of it, but because it fits into the picture. But what if the picture has to match the ocher?
