❀ Charlotte Houette is a painter born in
France in 1983. Her practice is mostly based in painting but
encompasses other mediums into it, experimenting with techniques like screenprinting,
building and sculpting within the canvases.
She occasionally makes objects and installations, and is involved in several collective
and editorial projects. ✿
★Cocotte is happy to present a new body of work produced by Charlotte Houette during her residency at Studio South (Luma foundation) in Arles, in June and July 2021.
Drawing formal inspiration from children popup books, these works are a new development of Houette’s habit of creating openings in her paintings, which for previous series took the form of model-like built-in windows, importing transparency and reflections within the usually opaque canvas surface.

❀"Amongst silkscreens of flowers and drowned faces, coulisse-like casements, and floating window frames, the viewer gropes for meaning within an atmosphere of eerie passivity, crowded alienation, or the strange pleasure of feeling trapped. It isn’t so much about horror, than the illogicality of dreams. The paintings flicker with feelings of foreignness, moments when the mind feels unrecognisable to itself, or when ones home, perhaps in foreign light, feels uninhabitable. (...)
