Since March 2020, Camilia Filipov lives in the mountains, surrounded by nature, which provides limitless time, inspiration, art materials, and tools. There, where bees can be seen and heard collecting pollen in late summer, where wild flowers flourish and nature-made pigments infuse colour into life, Camilia continues her quest. The garden became her studio (a wonder-land where life begins quietly and incorporates all that is) and Camilia soon realized that Everything happens right before her eyes – an impression, a state of absolute serenity which cannot be put into words. But she is there to witnes ...

Ephemeral sculpture
Ephemeral sculpture, 2021, green leaves, variable dimensions

Camilia Filipov is continuously experimenting with materials and reflecting upon the conceptual meaning of form and space trough many mediums - from sculpture, painting, drawing, and sometimes even video or sound. Her artistic practice is grounded in her belief that the process of creation is more important than its outcome - the 'art object' may not be how we decide it to be, but how nature constructs or deconstructs it afterwards. For her, gestures, their amplitude, and the space they cover are meant to capture the uniqueness of each passing moment.

Camilia Filipov lives a quiet life, in-between a finite living space and an infinite studio, immersed in nature. She mostly communicates non-verbally. She’s perfecting the craft of reading minds. She downloads ideas from the clouds. She’s a receptacle and a wireless transmitter, ‘some-thing’ that mediates between Art and its materialization. Art, for Camilia Filipov, is a way of life, the triumph of mind over aesthetics, and of time over matter.

Think of On Kawara, methodically repeating the same activity over decades, with as little emotional input as possible, then move on, as this applies only partially to Filipov’s modus operandi. In her case, repetition is neither meant to document the artist’s ongoing existence, nor to prove the fact that the artist is still alive – repetition, here, is a method of learning, of memorizing form, of perfecting artistic routine, of pursuing truth. Better think of the Japanese tea ceremony motto “ichi-go ichi-e”, which means “one time, one encounter” (even though all the intricate movements of the tea cere ...

Item 1 of 3

Since March, Camilia Filipov lives in the mountains, surrounded by nature, which provides limitless time, inspiration, art materials, and tools. There, where bees can be seen and heard collecting pollen in late summer, Camilia continues her quest. Can the artist explain and predict regularities in the world? Often chaotic, never exactly repeating, natural patterns are a matter of asymmetrical harmony. But where comes symmetry from and what is its natural ratio to irregularity?

Born in 1990 in Taraclia, Moldavia, Camilia Filipov lives and works in Romania. She has studied sculpture at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca (BA / MA, 2010-2015) and at Ecole Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc Liège in Belgium (Erasmus Scholarship, 2012-2013). Her first gallery show - "Surface Actually" - took place in 2018 at SABOT. Since then, her work has been included in several group shows in Romania and abroad, among which "Once more into the grey", at UNA ...
