Sara Sadik, Zetla Zone

Sara Sadik develops a protean artistic practice combining video, music performance, installation and photography. Her work is interested in recurring themes of hybridity, cultural and colonial legacy, migration and diaspora. Taking her inspiration in the suburban popular contemporary culture, she questions its representation through strong references to hip-hop music, fashion, social networks and science-fiction - specifically exploring the aesthetic symbols of “Beur” culture (from the working class of the North African diaspora in France, which is often exoticized).

WORKS

"Marseille appears not just as the everyday backdrop to her work but also as a vital, primary inspiration. In her latest video, Lacrizotiek, she films kids from the Busserine estate in the city’s notorious northern neighbourhoods: a news flash on her fictitious Blackwhite TV station reports the arrival of aliens among the concrete tower blocks. But the video shows a place that is usually written off as troubled in a joyful, humorous light, thrusting its young inhabitants, her co-authors, centre stage."

Exploring the concept of parallel dimension, Le monde chico is a floating city where North African descendant volunteers are invited to create a new society. This project is called "Projet QLF", which means "Family First": a slogan created by the hip-hop band PNL, and used by their fans as a sign of rallying and ...

Zetla Zone is an anticipation project imagining a possible evolution of a no-go zone, in France, in the near future. Through an anthropological analysis, the project explores the effects of neglect on a territory and its inhabitants, the notions of self, community and solidarity in a post-war climate, as well as neo-colonialism in the era of virtual reality.

"Since 2035, the Zetla Zone has been declared the most dangerous geographical area in the world. After ten years of distance and neglect, this territory has become uninhabitable and deserted, leaving a few rebels to fend ...
