With an artistic background in new-media art, Yuko Mohri’s art practice engages with circuits and connectivity. Untitled (pipe) portrays her concept of 'paintings of autonomous movement', created out of an unlikely assemblage of objects linked together in a self-sustaining loop. The idea of a 'circuit' or 'circle' forms an important motif in Mohri's work, where she disrupts, pulls apart and reconstructs objects to form new circuits. Urban Mining Sea was originally developed in 2014 as part of a large-scale installation using old discarded streetlamps that were used in Tokyo until they were replaced by LEDs. The large objects with their numerous small scratches and marks tell the story of their long life, evoking the majesty of a whale or a prehistoric plesiosaur specimen. Yuko Mohri was born in 1980, Kanagawa prefecture, and currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. Her recent solo exhibitions were held at Towada Art Center, Aomori, Japan (2018); Camden Arts Centre, London, UK (2018); The National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto (2018); White Rainbow, London (2017); Fujisawa City Art Space, Kanagawa, Japan (2017); Jane Lombard Gallery, New York (2016).
