Elene Chantladze’s drawings are allegorical, they are material manifestations of everyday life in its pleasure, its mystery, its grief, and its horror. The artist, now 74 years old, creates many of her works on cardboard packaging, or other papers, collected from her former position at a diagnostic center. Her materials are found as well, with many images created from elderberry juice, kerosene, tar, and jam. The materials are grounded in the life from which these images, fantastic and haunting, have arisen.
Elene Chantladze (b.1946) lives and works in Tskaltubo. A selection of exhibitions include: Elene Chantladze, LC Queisser, Tbilisi (2020); ‘Four Discourses’ – exhibition organized by Gallery Nectar in the framework of TAF Tbilisi Art Fair, Tbilisi (2019); ‘Dinosaurs Are Walking in the City’ – solo exhibition, Gallery Nectar, Tbilisi, (2018/19); ‘Diaries’ – Elene Chantladze, public reading in the framework of ‘Performance Days,’ Gallery Nectar, Tbilisi (2018); Connecting Spaces - Klingental, Basel (2014-15); Solo exhibition – Tskaltubo Art Festival, Tskaltubo (2014).
