SOPHIE TAPPEINER
For Liste Art Fair 2023, SOPHIE TAPPEINER presents a solo presentation that Jasmine Gregory specifically conceived for the art fair.
The work of Zurich-based artist Jasmine Gregory (*1987 in Washington, D.C.) develops around various sets of motifs, artistic gestures as well as assemblages to explore the tensions of artistic production, history of paintings as well as subjectivity in how it circulates in institutional and commercial contexts, thereby addressing absurd and abstracted notions of culture and commodity. Her paintings and sculptures draw from a complex spectrum of historic and contemporary reference points, such as baroque still life, portraiture, advertisement.
I like the tension between figurative and abstract forms and how these pull and push against each other. The ad series addresses the ways in which western cultural values are passed down. At first, this doesn't seem to figure into the abstract works, but when you start thinking about Abstract Expressionism and how macho the whole thing was and how it expressed some idea of American freedom, you start to realize that this idea of transmitting values continues in the abstract works.
