Melike Kara adresses questions of identity, belonging, and alienation through site-specific installations and paintings. Raised in the diaspora as the child of a Kurdish-Alevi family in Germany, the artist explores Kurdish identity as a particularly fractured identity without state affiliation. Depicting different settings and realities of life that correspond to a transnational experience, Kara shows how a heritage can be kept alive far from its natural place of origin.

Melike Kara (b. 1985) lives and works in Cologne, Germany. In 2014, Kara graduated from Düsseldorf Academy of Art where she studied under Rosemarie Trockel.
Recent solo exhibitions include 'No friends but the Mountains' at Kunstverein Göttingen (2020), 'My Beloved Wide Valley' at Arcadia Missa, London (2019), 'Risquons-Tout' at Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2019) and 'A Taste of Parsley' at Yuz Museum, Shanghai (2018).
